Type Camp? You bet your bodycopy!
Galiano Island, British Columbia

Fellow camper Lisa Hemingway sculpted this letter from wire.
Circle’s Susan McWatt FitzGerald recently returned from an intense one-week “refresher” in the finer points of typography—TypeCamp Galiano. The sortie involved five days on BC’s Galiano Island with other professional designers and students. Camp instructors included a PhD in typography, Shelley Gruendler, typographic artist Marian Bantjes, and type designer Ross Mills. Each day was packed with inspiring discovery sessions, ruthless boot camps, group critiques, field trips, and lessons on the evolution of letterforms and glyphs. Each evening ended with participants trying to top each other in vivid games of charades (with topics ranging from books, to movies, to typographic terminology). The collective pursuit for better understanding and knowledge was inspiring to all and stretched many of the campers to new heights. Evening kayaking trips and resplendent meteor showers were the icing on the cake. For more information, visit www.typecamp.org
